Laika + ELH [2017 –2020]

Collaboration

2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, while chatting with my friends from Laika Notebooks—a Mexican notebook brand I've been collaborating with since 2017—we discussed what we could do with all the leftover materials from notebook production. These materials were piling up in the workshop and would go to waste if we didn't find a new purpose for them.

That year marked the third anniversary of our collaborations, so I thought it would be a good idea to create something to celebrate that. The concept was to take elements from the covers and interiors to use in postcards, which would be packaged with a ribbon of the same size as those used on the notebooks.

That's how a series of 16 postcards were designed. They acted as a visual journey through the products I had collaborated on. Beyond being cover elements, they would become unique standalone pieces.

Laika's brand philosophy involves crafting well-designed products that are affordable and accessible to a broader audience. Hence, it was essential for us that the development of these materials didn't require mass production and was also offered for free to the brand's customers.

These limited edition pieces sold out quickly and allowed us to experiment with textures and new uses for materials that usually end up in the trash bin.
