Oscar Hagerman (1936) is a Mexican architect and designer who, in 2018, was invited by the kurimanzutto gallery to create an exhibition paying homage to the chairs that have become design icons in Mexico throughout his career.

The result was an exhibition that encapsulates his insights in the simple form of a chair, a form he considers the most humble in architecture. He acquired these insights during his visits to different parts of the country, where he engaged with local communities to understand and enrich his creative process.

The origin of this reflection is the Arrullo Chair (1969), based on a popular model which, after winning design awards, was reintroduced to local artisan workshops and began to be reproduced throughout the country. In this process, the chair relinquishes the spotlight of being an exclusive creation by a designer and finds its place in markets, roadsides, and street stalls; now, it is a chair that belongs to Mexican homes.

This publication, commissioned by kurimanzutto, was an opportunity to document the architect's pieces and teachings that cover a significant part of his work centered around this everyday object. Colors, textures, and materials take the main role.

The Franklin Gothic Heavy font helps create chapter divisions and reflects the simplicity and personality of the pieces.

“Industrial design teaches us to seek original forms, but the greatest richness lies in creating a universe that belongs to the people and making them feel that it is their own.”  Oscar Hagerman
