Planta Libre
10 Principles of Good Design
Collaboration
2019
Versión Español
"Planta Libre" is a podcast about architecture and everything related to it. In 2019, I was invited to talk about design on the podcast, and with that pretext, in collaboration with Laika Notebooks, we created a special edition of notebooks.
I love the decontextualization of elements we use daily; I believe their simplicity makes them truly remarkable.
“Good design is honest”. Dieter Rams
The first part of the project involved selecting the most iconic designs that Dieter Rams collaborated on. During this search, it was discovered that an essential aspect shared by three of these pieces was a circular element—or elements—that could not only create the zero in the number 10 but also establish a connection with the other piece in the collaboration.
An important aspect of Dieter Rams' philosophy is simplicity in forms, honesty in the use of materials, and respect for the environment. For this reason, it seemed necessary to utilize the entire surface of the cardboard without generating any waste. Additionally, risograph inks were used, as they tend to be environmentally friendly and, unlike traditional printing methods, do not require high print runs to be cost-effective.
The result was wonderful, as tributes to Dieter Rams often tend to be quite formal and serious. However, by using a vibrant tone like pink, contrasted with black, a perfect balance is created.
A colorful, bold, yet respectful homage that respectfully pays tribute to one of the masters of modernist design.
NOTEBOOK
The "Planta Libre" notebook is another tribute, this time to architecture and those elements that, at times, due to their commonality, tend to be considered insignificant. For this cover, two such elements were chosen: graphic scales and the symbolism of the cardinal points. When decontextualized, they create mysterious and graphically simple pieces that become the perfect link with Dieter Rams' pieces.
